VisualPulse FAQ

Q: Is there a way to suspend the Ping feature and only report other measurement options?

A: Currently there is no official configuration method to suspend the Ping feature. However there is a testing feature that suspends the ping process. This can be done by starting the alias name with two exclamation marks. i.e. ‘alias=!!Production’.

Q: I just installed VisualPulse. When I go to the Web Interface and select one of the reports (Last Hour, Last 24 Hours, or Last 30 Days), why do I get a "...page cannot be found" error?

A: To facilitate rapid information access, VisualPulse actually stores these three reports, each as a separate HTML page, in the "www" subdirectory of the main VisualPulse application folder. These pages are regenerated "in the background" at regular intervals that coincide with the archiving of latency and packet loss information to historical log files. When you first start running VisualPulse, these pages are not present because the application has not yet reached the first log interval and subsequently there is no historical data to report. Wait a few minutes and try again.

Q: When trying to start the VisualPulse server I get the exception: "Address in use (port 80)" Can I use another port?

A: If you are using VisualRoute, or another application, that has its port pointing to 80 (the default http port), please change the port within VisualPulse to another port that you have available, i.e. 8001, 8080.

Q: Can VisualPulse Web Edition check the availability of more than one URL?

A: VisualPulse only allows an IP address to be registered once. This means that VisualRoute can only check the availability of one Web address (or one Port) per IP address. To monitor multiple URLs (Web pages) on the same IP address, please try our DesktopProfile product. It can monitor an unlimited number of Web addresses, on the same server or multiple servers, as well as monitoring many other elements of your IT infrastructure.

Q: Can VisualPulse monitor ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) networks?

A: Yes, VisualPulse 5.2d can effectively monitor ARP networks when configured for 2 pings per IP address. ARP networks cause the initial ping of a device to have increased latency values because it includes the overhead for the ARP route selection process. When configured for dual pings, VisualPulse will initiate 2 pings per device and ignore the first ping result so that latency of the second ping only is measured. The second ping uses the ARP cache and normalizes the ARP overhead.

Q: If I've forgotten my password, how I can get into the system, and is it possible for me to change it?

A: There is no way to find out the current password (this is a security feature). It is a 'one-way' function. To start over, delete the \windows\java\dsc\vip\startup.ini file.

Q: How do I configure VisualPulse on my machine?

A: Start up VisualPulse, and under the option file choose Preferences. Configure the following:

Port 80 (or an alternative port)
Max Users: 5
Access Control - Full
CIDR - 0.0.0.0/0

Then click on Add List. Exit the dialog, and press start.

At the top of the Box you should see VisualPulse Server [Your machine name]. To connect to VisualPulse from a browser, the machine name indicated above in the URL box. This will take you into the VisualPulse Home page.

Q:  What if I need support?

A: Simply submit a Support Request and we will be pleased to help you implement VisualPulse or answer any questions you may have.
